Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Paja
In the times of Felipe II (in the mid-16th century), Madrid was transformed into the capital of the Spanish Empire. The churches, palaces, convents and other monumental buildings of the era, located in the Plaza Mayor area, comprise what is currently known as the Madrid of the Austrias. Madrid of the Bourbons Itinerary
Between the 18th and 19th centuries, Madrid experienced massive urban growth. The Age of Enlightenment and the artistic sensitivity of the monarchs led to what today makes up the Madrid of the Bourbons. During the reign of Charles III some of the most representative monuments of the city were built: the Puerta de Alcalá (1), Puerta del Sol (4), Plaza Cibeles (2)... (see photo) The Palacio Real, the Botanical Garden, The Prado Museum. are some examples. Worth noting is the district of Vistillas, given this name for the excellent views over Casa de Campo, the Cathedral and the Manzanares valley. |

Sierra de la pedriza
The Sierra de la Pedriza comprises one of the most important geographical accidents in terms of granite morphology.
Infinity of rocky shapes that recall a multitude of objects; this is how they have got their names: the helmet, Elephant, etc.
We can stroll along paths and through delightful woods very close to the city.
|
Sierra de Patones
The unarguable natural worth of this range joins with the historic value of its villages. The legend goes that a group of families lived in the valley of Patones who obeyed the command of an old man who they called King.
The last of the kings was Juan Prieto, in the 18th century, and the story goes that the villagers decided to do away with their own monarchy due to the ridicule they received from neighbouring villages because of their name.
