NEW YEAR'S EVE From the Puerta del Sol the New Year is welcomed in eating the traditional grapes to the pealing of the bells (one grape is eaten for each peal). Every year, the Spanish television channel broadcasts the clock striking twelve live from this unique square to the rest of Spain.

THE MAGIC KINGS
The Magic King's parade, the three kings in charge of bringing presents on the night of the 5th of January, pass along the main streets of Madrid leaving a trail of excitement and enthusiasm amongst those attending, young and old alike.

CARNIVAL
The Carnival fills the streets of Madrid with parades, groups and fancy-dress parties in different districts. On Ash Wednesday (the Wednesday after Carnival), the ceremony of the Burial of the Sardine is held, this day marking the beginning of Lent. |

EASTER PROCESSIONS
The city fills with processions to the rhythm of sacred songs in flamenco style. It is a very deeply rooted religious tradition amongst Madrid's customs. You will almost certainly be surprised by it. |

COMMUNITY OF MADRID FESTIVAL
The 2nd of May s a very important day for the folk of Madrid since this is the official festival of the Community of Madrid region. This date commemorates the rising up of the capital against the French occupation. Fairs are held as well as an important bullfighting event. |

SAINT ISIDORE, THE FARMER, PATRON SAINT OF THE CITY
On the 15th of May St Isidore's Day is celebrated. As patron saint of the city, fairs, gatherings and the best of the bullfighting events are held in his honour. |

LA PALOMA
The fair of La Paloma is a traditional festival held between the 6th and 15th of August. This festival recovers the folkloric figures of the chulo and chulapa, traditional working-class men and women of Madrid in their traditional dress. |

THE FESTIVAL OF ALMUDENA
On the 9th of November the festival of the Virgin of the Almudena is held, who, according to legend, saved the city from disaster in 1646. The main act of the festival is a mass held in the Plaza Mayor where around 10,000 people assemble.

CHRISTMAS
In December the streets of the city are adorned with Christmas decorations. The Plaza Mayor is full of traditional stalls where you can buy all kinds of Christmas or festival items |
